Sociedade de História Natural

Founded on March 18, 1998, the Natural History Society is a non-profit scientific organization based in Torres Vedras (Portugal) that aims to promote paleontological and geological heritage. It develops paleontological research work focused mainly on fossil vertebrates and other initiatives in scientific research and pedagogical activities, particularly in the education for GeoPaleontology.

The Natural History Society sees itself as an entity dedicated to the management of paleontological and geohistorical heritage, taking care of one of the largest paleontological collections in the country, made up of vertebrate and invertebrate fossils from the Upper Jurassic. Creating and managing a Paleontological Museum is also part of its statutory objectives.​

Objectives

  • Promote and develop research, dissemination and training activities within the scope of geological and paleontological heritage;

  • Promote study, dissemination and training actions in the area of earth sciences;

  • Restoration and curation of the region’s natural, geological, paleontological and archaeological heritage;

  • Develop environmental safeguard studies in the areas of paleontology and archeology;

  • Raising awareness of the importance of geological, paleontological, archaeological and environmental heritage.
